– Rheticus Experience –
The Rheticus experience is a conversational-storytelling chatbot. It allows users to get in a direct conversation with Rheticus and his famous fellows. With a personalized and easy-to-use interface, users are able to experience the history in a truly immersive way.
To get a better understanding of the users' needs we researched their pain and gains with several Empathy Maps. Our user-centered design approach gave us the right perspective on these needs.
After a detailed user research, we built different proto-personas and started to write scenarios. With the scenario it was possible to detect occurring user needs. This gave us some first insights about the content and the usability of the system.
With the bodystorming we took a big step forward in our conceptional part. We gained a deeper insight which kind of service the system have to offer. This shaped our ongoing concept and the feature definition of the website.
In total, our user study contained: Proto-Personas, Scenarios, Bodystorming, Quantitative Google Trends Study, KJ Affinity Diagram, User Stories, User Value/Concept Effort Map and the Kano Modell. During this process we also came up with the product vision.
The interactive storytelling cosmos enables people who are interested in the history of astronomy or astrology to explore easily consumable infotainment. As a result, the audience experiences a personal, thrilling and emotional odyssey through space and time. Different to other descriptive websites about the history of astronomy -as for example Wikipedia- the Web-Application allows users to be directly immersed into the history. So the audience explores new perspectives on an innovative and thrilling journey.
After getting all important data about the audience we started with the conceptual prototype. The A key step was constructing the logic of the system and applying a storytelling flow for users. An interactive element was created for each storyline, which users can explore during the conversation with Rheticus. With a detailed research on the individual topics, we were able to form the stories from real and scientifically correct data.
With the detailed concept and research, the first wireframes could now be designed. By knowing that our audience wants to visit the website more often by their smartphones, our design approach was mobile-first. By prototyping different types of wireframes we finally came up with a working example. We tested the wireframe with our target audience and enhanced it iterative to their needs.
A major challenge was the navigation, because users may need to change stories and set bookmarks during their visit. We built a simple navigation system, that offers them a natural usability.
The "Main Navigation" presents an overview of the different types of stories. It also allows users accessing the content, even if they are not in the mood to talk with a chatbot.
The "Story Navigation" is implemented in the active conversation between Rheticus and the audience. It enables users easily jump to a starting point of the story. From there, they can bookmark the entire story or even send it to friends.

In order to achieve a clear and compelling appearance, a uniform image style was defined. This enabled us to convert different historic pictures into one consistent style.
With the use of 2 Typefaces we built a font contrast that supports the content in a new modern way. The website is easy to navigate and presents history in a new personalized infotainment experience.
