– BEYOND HOME –
I came up with this short movie as a personal review from my last year journey through
Sri Lanka and Turkey. The whole movie is made out of still images. By applying a parallax effect in After Effects and a lot of editing in Photoshop I was able to bring the images back to life.
While reorganizing my photo folder I found lots of pictures that haven´t been published yet. So I started collecting some of the photos and prepared them for sharing. During this task, I remembered how great my adventures was and the experience I gained. I thought about how I can share this experience with my friends effectively and started arranging all the images in a sequence. Soon, I got a collection from countries like Austria, SriLanka and Turkey.
One of the images took a while to shot because of his presence as a diffuse nebula. The Orion Nebula (also called M42) is situated in the Milky Way and is one of the brightest nebula in our neighborhood. It's visible to the naked eye in the night sky and you can spot him also with binoculars if you know where to search.
If you want to shot a planet or nebula like that you will need to take long exposure images. But if you take long exposure images then you need to compensate the earth rotation otherwise you will get a fuzzy picture. You can do this with an Astro tracking mount. I had no mount, so for me it was a big deal because I could exposure only a few seconds. But with a program called DeepSkyStacker, I was able to take multiple exposures and stack them together. In total I made 187 pictures, which gave me the result what you can see on the following picture.
By separating the background, mid, and foreground, it was possible to animate the photos and it really took a while to prepare all the images.
Once everything was set I moved to After Effects and started to animate the pictures one by one. A major challenge was to keep the movements simple but surprising.
The result was a pleasing and novel animation video.
